Samsung Galaxy Tab is Here

Samsung Galaxy Tab is in market these two weeks. Yesterday, I went to Sams Club and gave this new device a try.

The size is 7 inch which is good to carry around. It is not heavy as iPad but considering the screen size, it is not light.

I tried few thing with it. It is not that smooth like iPod Touch or iPad when I change from landscape to portrait. Screen jumps when I change the orientation. The icon is not very detail and clear comparing to iPod Touch.

Verizon sale person told me they don't have data plan turned on for this Samsung Galaxy Tab nor WiFi is available in that Sams Club so I cannot try to get on Internet. He told me without data plan, the build-in GPS will not work and no map will be downloaded.

I tried to use rear camera to take two pictures in the store. The pictures were great! I didn't have time to try to play games and other things.

One good things Samsung Galaxy Tab got are SD card can be used and front/rear cameras.

There is some distance Samsung Galaxy Tab need to catch iPad.

Finally, people in China can buy an iPad in normal stores.

Although there was rain in Beijing today, there were people lined up outside the store and wait to get a iPad. Many people had several thousands yuan cash in their pocket for this iPad, some of them counted the money carefully before getting into Apple retail store.

They were so happy to open the boxs of iPad and enjoy it!

Should We Get A New iPod Touch 4G?

Today, this new iPod Touch 4G(4th generation) is in Apple retail stores. We bought a 32GB iPod Touch last year this time and enjoy it very much. I upgrade the OS for this 3rd generation iPod Touch so it is running multi-tasking and with all new features with emails and folders. Now, it comes iPod Touch 4G with cameras, FaceTime and other things. We are asking ourselves if we should upgrade our iPod Touch.

Since we got our iPad in April, we use this iPod Touch than before. The main thing our 3rd generation iPod Touch and iPad don't have is camera which in 4th generation of iPod Touch. Since we have digital cameras, we can take pictures and videos with them. Although we cannot send out pictures or video from our current camera, we can live with what we have. So, at this time, we like to skip this new iPod Touch.

If you have 1st or 2nd generation iPod Touch, it is good time to upgrade to iPod Touch 4th generation now. If you never have one iPod Touch, you can try and get one if you like.

New 7 inch iPad is coming

These days, people see news about this new and smaller iPad around the web.

Just like people pointed out that many kids are too young for a laptop. Although they love iPod Touch, it would be nice for them to have something larger because the games they like are mostly puzzle games where you slide stuff around the screen. They can also use this 7 inch iPad to read books. Having a bigger screen is nice for that stuff.

But an iPad is too big and heavy for kids little hands and it's a bit expensive as kid toy. A lot of parents may spend $300 on one that fits kids hands better. A 7" iPad would be a HUGE hit for the holiday season. A 7" iPad would probably cost the same as a Playstation, thus making it a realistic kid present. The $500 iPad doesn't fit that role quite as well.

Few advantage to have 7 inch iPad:
1. cheaper
2. lighter
3. good for reading books
4. easier to carry

If it had GPS unit and dash mountable, it will make GPS unit and with other things.

iSpot

This is a new device provided by Clear.com. It works like hot spot and provide WiFi connection for up to 8 iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone.

At this point of time, the device selling at price of $29. Month by month no contract plan is $25 unlimited plan.

Like Clear.com suggests the location change make big difference sometimes, maybe few inches. If you have this iSpot, you should try to put it in different place as signal is not strong.

It is good for people having a party in a park without Free WiFi service.

Interestingly, the iSpot lets you configure the strength of the WiFi signal to conserve battery life if you don't need much range. I tried to use it with my iPod Touch and listen music through Pandora with this iSpot on the way to work. It works great without any interaption for 18 miles drive.

Pro: connect up to 8 iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad at same price as AT&T unlimited month by month plan(no contract). AT&T plan only for one device.

Con: converge is limited in big cities

iPad Makes Our Life Easy

iPad 3G version is here. For one month, there are over 1 million iPad been sold.

Why so many iPads have in people hands in such short of time?

People pointed out:

"Mainstream desktop PCs and notebooks do more -- a lot more -- than iPads. They have more input options, more applications, more screen real estate.

They give you more, but they demand more. They require more troubleshooting of problems, more general system maintenance, more file management. They require more and constant learning, just to keep them running. Laptops require more frequent charging. They have more "stuff"connected to them. They cost more money.

This constant embrace of "more" has made life way too complex. Just paying bills, getting kids into college and surviving in the modern world feels like a war against a bombardment of increasing complexity.

As a result, people have begun to gravitate toward simplicity. And that's what's going on with the iPad. iPads do less, but demand much, much less from you."

It is called "Magic Piano" made by Smule at price of $1. I got this after reading above news and found it is a great game.

iPad Camera Kit is here

This camera kit for iPad is working very well. For SC card reader, when it is plugged into iPad, Photo will be up automatically. Camera will show up other than Photos, Albums and Places on the top. All the pictures in SC card will show. Any pictures can be selected(a check mark will show). On the right, a blue color Import can be selected to import pictures. On the left, red color Delete Selected can be clicked to delete selected pictures. During the import, a pop-up window will show us with two options: Import All, Import Selected. After import completed, a question window pop-up with this message: "Import Complete (next line)Would you like to delete imported photos from the attached camera?" with two options: Delete or Keep(as default). After import, under Albums, there are two new Albums related to this import: Last Import containing all newly imported photos and All Imported which contains all imported pictures.

For USB camera connector, it is used to connect iPad with new digital camera(supporting PTP - Picture Transfer Protocol) with a USB cable. As I see, it is for digital camera not using SD card or people like to download pictures from camera to iPad directly without taking out SD card. Once I pluging this connector, digital camera is in play mode so iPad will show all the pictures in the digital camera. Import process is the same as using SD card connector. Other than connect to digital camera with this connector, it can be used to connect iPhone or iPod Touch to import photos to iPad. Another way(from iPad to iPhone or iPod Touch) will not work since I am getting "iPod is not supporting this" message.

This is a nice camera kit to download pictures to iPad without a Mac or PC. It is good for field or on site use.

After reading news about using this USB camera kit connector with USB keyboard, I tried it. It is working! Now, I can use my USB PC keyboard with USB connector in this USB camera kit with iPad.

iPad Camera Connector Kit is on the way

iPad WiFi Disconnect or Dropping connection

We are using the router coming with Verizon FIOS and experiencing same issue as some of iPad users. WiFi drops from time to time.I have to rejoin network by retype password. After reading blogs and discussion related to this issue. it seams it is related to iPad and router. Not every router gets this issue. So I tried to connect a Buffalo router to Verizon router and set iPad to use this Buffalo router. It is working! I don't get disconnect any more.

Videos
Photos — Slideshow playback only

If you like to get this adapter, make sure it fits your needs. Basically, it is only for watching video, photo, and slide show with Keynote but not showing everything from iPad.

iPad is Great

In 4/3 morning right before 9am, I arrived the local Apple store near my home. There are about 50 people were there to pick reserved iPad and lining on right hand side out of store. There is another line about 15 people to buy it without reserve on the left. They allowed 10 people to get into the store on each patch.

Soon, I saw people carry their new iPad and came out with happy/exciting faces. The first one came out was a man who pull out his Mac Book and started to sync iPad with Mac right in front of the Apple store.

About 20 minutes, all the people outside the store got into it. So did I with the people in line on the left and had my first try of iPad. iPad is great! I should reserve it and pick up in store instead of pre-order and ship to home.

My iPad arrived home around 12pm and delivered by UPS. In last two days, we have been playing it and even brought it to our friends house to show them this great new toy.

In January Apple keynote, Steve was holding this iPad and showing it to the world. In two days, many people can get a hands on this great new toy.

iPad is in UPS

All the iPad are picked up from ShenZhen, China by UPS. Now, people see status in UPS tracking as "Exception". It means UPS is holding all iPad and not ship them to the front doors till April 3rd.

3/29/2010

iPad shipped

Today, people saying they got email message "Shipped" from Apple. It was shipped through UPS. Since the arrival day is Saturday, April 3, which is right before Easter. People may go out to visit relatives for Easter and not at home to wait iPad package.

One person warried about the package containing iPad and saying

"Hope there are no thieves... with all these Apple packages going out and people away visiting relatives. They would just have to sit in your yard pretending to tend the bushes or something. "

Hopefully, it is a signature required delivery from UPS so iPad not gets lost. UPS website is going to be flooded with iPad customers hitting the refresh button all day long between now and Saturday to check shipping status.

People are receiving tracking update - "Origin Scan: Shenzhen, CN". It is shpped from a city in south of China - Shenzhen. It is a long way to go, from China to US.

iPad is coming in two weeks

We have used iPod Touch for a while and like it very much. The iPad is far more than a Touch in almost all ways. First of all, the only valid comparison of screen sizes has to be based on the number of square inches of screen surface of both -- not the diagonal measurement of the two screens, which does't tell the entire story at all. So, the screen size of iPad is much bigger than iPod Touch. We pre-order one 32GB iPad WiFi version in Apple Online Store and look forward to getting it on April 3rd. For many of people, the iPad is a new and very exciting device from which we can move into the future and not be stuck in the past.

Only Few People Want 3G Model of iPad?

Today, AT&T CEO got an investor meeting and expecting few people will get 3G model of iPad.

You may read this news:
http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6214NY20100302?type=technologyNews

As AT&T CEO is not expecting a lot of people to get 3G model, I have different view. I may get a 3G model since I can use it anywhere and get 250MB plan or unlimited plan without contract. Say, if we have a trip to Florida, we will get one month plan and use our iPad on the road during two weeks trip. Maybe we only check emails, weather, find places and have lite web browsing. I am going to avoid downloading videos and music in those days when I am using 3G network. One reason to get 3G model is other than 3G, we can get real GPS in this 3G model which is not in WiFi model.

Maybe, AT&T CEO does not like to see more people get into 3G network now since it is not good for more people using it at this point of time.

Why no camera and FM radio in iPad?

Build-in camera and FM radio are two functions we like to have in this coming iPad. Why are they not included?

Three reasons I can think of.

1. Cost. To keep the cost low for first generation of iPad. Half year ago, there a lot of discussion on how much this iPad will be priced. A lot of people expected it will cost from $699 to $999. When last month Steve Jobs announced the iPad, most of people were surprised with the price. Then, people took iPad apart and found out the cost of those parts, and came out the total cost. Now, they are saying, Apple can sell it in even lower price. Without camera and FM, Apple can keep this first generation of iPad low so more people can buy it.

2. Accessory. Without camera and FM radio, Apple and third party can put camera or FM radio on the market as accessories to earn extra money. Looking at iPhone and iPod Touch, accessory is a huge market.

3. Leave room for next generation of iPad. After one or two years, by adding more features such as camera or FM radio to next generation of iPad will get new or existing iPad owner to buy new iPad. Surely, it is not bad thing for Apple.

Get iPad with 3G model?

iPad is coming next month. One topic people discussing is if getting WiFi model or WiFi+3G model. The price difference is $130. To get 3G model, you got 3G and GPS. Right now, this 3G can be used with at&t service(no contract needed).

First question people have is if $130 is worth the hardware of 3G and GPS. As we know, iPad comes with a 9.7inch big screen which is bigger than most of standalone GPS in the current market. It is great to use this GPS for one person to look and find the place while another is driving. That is the case when we travel and go to a new place. I know I will pay a lot more to get a 9.7inch size of GPS.

Second question people have is if 3G service is needed. For us, WiFi is good enough most of time. But, 3G is great option we like to have since we will need it from time to time. This no contract 3G service is great for us especially when we travel since we can get browse the web, get info on the road, stay connect. Although I like to see a build-in camera in this iPad, I know there is a way to get this functionality from current iPad. There is a new accessory we can buy along with iPad. This package comes with two adaptors - USB adaptor connects to digital camera and a SC card reader. We can use this first adaptor connect digital camera to take pictures and save pictures to iPad, geotag the pictures with info taken by iPad GPS and send out pictures to friends with 3G service.

Today, I read rumors about pre-order iPad will be available on Feb 25. We are looking forward to the day when we have the iPad. The first thing we are going to do is to clean up our iPod touch so it just has music, email, and maybe 10 of the best apps. Then have the iPad full of all the other pages and pages of ok apps.

Apple Tablet ?

On Jan 27, 2010 Apple will held a party and product event. A tablet from Apple is expected. Now, people are discussing what key features it will provide.

1. An efficient text input method: hopefully, it will support Bluetooth keyboard; a larger and better touch screen keyboard(for sure);
2. User expandable storage: SD card slot or USB port for portable hard drive;
3. A camera can be used for chat or video conferencing or take pictures/video
4. A GPS with loaded map for driving and geotag pictures; an electronic compass

There many questions out there:

What kind of OS comes with this Apple tablet? and so on.

I am checking the news related to this tablet everyday. We will see if it is a great thing to get.
