Why no camera and FM radio in iPad?

Build-in camera and FM radio are two functions we like to have in this coming iPad. Why are they not included?

Three reasons I can think of.

1. Cost. To keep the cost low for first generation of iPad. Half year ago, there a lot of discussion on how much this iPad will be priced. A lot of people expected it will cost from $699 to $999. When last month Steve Jobs announced the iPad, most of people were surprised with the price. Then, people took iPad apart and found out the cost of those parts, and came out the total cost. Now, they are saying, Apple can sell it in even lower price. Without camera and FM, Apple can keep this first generation of iPad low so more people can buy it.

2. Accessory. Without camera and FM radio, Apple and third party can put camera or FM radio on the market as accessories to earn extra money. Looking at iPhone and iPod Touch, accessory is a huge market.

3. Leave room for next generation of iPad. After one or two years, by adding more features such as camera or FM radio to next generation of iPad will get new or existing iPad owner to buy new iPad. Surely, it is not bad thing for Apple.

Get iPad with 3G model?

iPad is coming next month. One topic people discussing is if getting WiFi model or WiFi+3G model. The price difference is $130. To get 3G model, you got 3G and GPS. Right now, this 3G can be used with at&t service(no contract needed).

First question people have is if $130 is worth the hardware of 3G and GPS. As we know, iPad comes with a 9.7inch big screen which is bigger than most of standalone GPS in the current market. It is great to use this GPS for one person to look and find the place while another is driving. That is the case when we travel and go to a new place. I know I will pay a lot more to get a 9.7inch size of GPS.

Second question people have is if 3G service is needed. For us, WiFi is good enough most of time. But, 3G is great option we like to have since we will need it from time to time. This no contract 3G service is great for us especially when we travel since we can get browse the web, get info on the road, stay connect. Although I like to see a build-in camera in this iPad, I know there is a way to get this functionality from current iPad. There is a new accessory we can buy along with iPad. This package comes with two adaptors - USB adaptor connects to digital camera and a SC card reader. We can use this first adaptor connect digital camera to take pictures and save pictures to iPad, geotag the pictures with info taken by iPad GPS and send out pictures to friends with 3G service.

Today, I read rumors about pre-order iPad will be available on Feb 25. We are looking forward to the day when we have the iPad. The first thing we are going to do is to clean up our iPod touch so it just has music, email, and maybe 10 of the best apps. Then have the iPad full of all the other pages and pages of ok apps.

On Jan 27, 2010 Apple will held a party and product event. A tablet from Apple is expected. Now, people are discussing what key features it will provide.

1. An efficient text input method: hopefully, it will support Bluetooth keyboard; a larger and better touch screen keyboard(for sure);
2. User expandable storage: SD card slot or USB port for portable hard drive;
3. A camera can be used for chat or video conferencing or take pictures/video
4. A GPS with loaded map for driving and geotag pictures; an electronic compass

There many questions out there:
